Breakfast

·

Breakfast has a peculiar history. At its commercial inception is John Harvey Kellogg–the man who coined the phrase “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” He created his iconic cereal of corn flakes first as a remedy for his patients; as a firm believer and a leader of the eugenics program, Kellogg believed that a bland breakfast, or a palette in general, would aid oneself in avoiding sins, particularly masturbation. His brother Will Kellogg then took the idea of his cereal and added sugar to it to make it slightly more appetizing, selling it as the world’s first Corn Flakes which led to the creation of the Kellogg Company.

Breakfast has changed quite a bit since then. Now you see countless cereals at every grocery store and every month there seems to be a new trendy breakfast meal that blows up on social media. However, my breakfast routine has remained remarkably consistent throughout my life. Daily, I’ve opted for a bowl or more of cereal, with a tried-and-true method: starting with milk (a somehow controversial choice), gently warming it to avoid the shock of cold on freshly brushed teeth, then adding a generous portion of cereal (usually honey bunches of oats with almonds). I repeat this process until the milk runs out, refilling with cereal as needed.

What’s great about breakfast is that it works anywhere and everywhere. You need snacks for a road trip? Get some pastries. Woke up past noon on a weekend? Have some cereal. Just finished a midnight study session or game night? Eat some more cereal. Breakfast for me constitutes 50% of my diet give or take.

What’s more is that breakfast works forever. At least I think so. I’m a high schooler so take this next bit with a grain of salt, but from what I have seen most adults have taken a similar liking to the enjoyment and variability of breakfast. Let me just say that as a fellow passionate breakfast enjoyer, nothing is better than seeing a middle aged father go to the grocery store to buy Cinnamon Toast Crunch, not for his three daughters, but for himself instead. I always find breakfast reliable in this sense, a go-to comfort food to gobble down while watching YouTube or TV. I give breakfast a 1402/1600.
